Add charge items
Overview
This flow describes how to add one or more charge items for a patient in Care. You add charge items to record the billable products and services that the patient receives.
Pre-requisites
- You have the permissions listed below.
- The patient has an active, billable account.
- If the patient has no active, open account, Care creates one for you when you add the first charge item.
- You start the flow from an appointment page, a service request page, or the Charge Items tab of an account.
Permissions

| Can Create Charge Item | Add charge items to a patient's account. Facility Admin, Admin, Staff, Doctor, Nurse, and Pharmacist roles hold this permission. |
Steps
1. Open the Add Charge Items form
Go to the appointment page, the service request page, or the Charge Items tab of the account.
Click Add Charge Items.
Note: On an appointment page or the billing tab of an account, press a to open the Add Charge Items form.
2. Select the charge item definitions
Select one or more charge item definitions. Each charge item definition is a pre-configured product or service with a price.

| Charge Item Definition | The pre-configured, priced product or service that the patient receives. |
| Quantity | The number of units of the product or service. |
| Performer | The person who performed the billed service. This field is optional. |
3. Set the quantity
Set the quantity for each selected charge item definition.
4. Select the performer
Select the performer for each charge item. Skip this field if you do not record a performer.
5. Submit the form
Submit the form to create the charge items.
Note: Press i on the appointment page or the account page to create an invoice from the charge items.
Expected Outcome
- Care creates one charge item for each selected charge item definition.
- Each new charge item has the status Billable.
- The charge items show on the Charge Items tab of the account.
- If the patient had no active, open account, Care creates the account and adds the charge items to it.
